Layout photography

Layout photography is an area I am becoming more involved in, particularly for BRM and Hornby Magazine. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Greig Mackenzie’s OO gauge, DCC powered ‘Poulton-le-Fylde’ layout for BRM and my thanks to Greig for his time! He is a member of the Falkirk MRC and an excellent modeller as the two sample shots posted here demonstrate.

Fine attention to detail (the detail itself is not at all over done) is a feature of this narrow compact layout. Buildings are fully lit and finished with interior details; including tiled toilets and booking office features. It was exhibited at the 2013 Perth exhibition (Perth MRC) where I saw it for the first time.

Another project was to photograph ‘Hazelbank’ for Hornby Magazine (OO gauge, 1970s and 1980s BR blue era). This is an older continuous run layout which has been thoroughly and carefully overhauled by its owner, Graeme Moyes. Graeme is a member of the Stirling & Clachmannan Model Railway Club which also exhibits Elliott Bridge and Airthrey Park regularly. It seems to me that BR blue and BR sector eras are favorite amongst the membership.

Some classic Scottish traction working a mixed freight. The quarry buildings and ballast loading sidings appear in the back ground of this view of Hazelbank.

My thanks to both clubs and the layout owners for taking the time out to allow me to photograph their creations. I am seeking more layouts of this quality based on the Scottish circuit for featuring in HM and BRM.
